Butterfly
Butterfly is a film I made using a number of experimental animation techniques, primarily manipulating strips of 35mm film, to explore light, shape, rapid movement, (re)birth, and the materiality of celluloid film.
I wanted to explore the direct and tactile relationship between image and material. I used various paints, inks, natural objects, and other tools to create a palette with which to examine, simply, how the light of a viewer/projector affects them. I also took inspiration from the aleatoric ideas John Change derived from the I Ching.
Unconscious processes and chance operations - these are the laws which govern the creation of all things; all beings including the creatures represented in this film. And these same laws are what I used to make Butterfly.
